Photomontage

The word montage means 'the technique of selecting, editing, and piecing together separate sections of film to form a continuous whole.'
A photo montage is a montage created from different sections of different images to make a new image.
Photomontages were originally created to take the mick out of the modern world and it went against normal social actions and opinions.

Hannah Höch

Hannah Hoch (1889-1978) was one of the creators of photomontage. Her work was best known in the Weimar period (1919-1933). Höch was a German Dada artist which meant she did what she liked, even if it meant going against the general opinions and views of other people.

This photo is an example of a photomontage by Hannah Höch. This photo is very colourful and although it's a bit all over the place, it's an organised mess, so it looks good. I think this is a good photo because it's very effective and not all the pictures used to create it are taken in colour, but they all work together.

This is another good example of Höch's work. It is very simple, but very effective. This picture is clearly made up of many different parts from different photos, as even the 2 eyes are different. I like this photo because it's different to normal portraits and again, it all works together.

I really like this picture as I think it looks very sinister, but it is just made up of different parts of different people. I like how Höch's made the lips a lot bigger on the picture than the would be in real life on a real person, I think it makes the photo look less natural, and more different. I also like how the eyes are on the wrong sides of the faces because it makes the face look even weirder than it would do if they were the right way round.

David Hockney

David Hockney (1937-Present) is an English pinter, draughtman, printmaker, stage designer and photographer. His most known work is the'Joiners'. This style of work was created when he took multiple polaroid pictures and placed them together, to produce one larger picture.

This photo is an example of a photomontage by David Hockney.

I like this picture because I like how the polariods all go together well but the subjects have moved during the shoot and so they look as though they're almost not human.

This is another good example of Hockney's photomontage work. I really like this photo because it's just a really simple idea of people swimming but I love how in some of the shots, there is only half a person because that person has continued to swim and they look like they have 2 pairs of legs. I also really like the colour of the pool in this photo just because it is so bright and vibrant.

I like this picture because I like how scattered the images look but they make up a picture. I also like how colourful all the imdividual pictures are and the way that they make up such a big, colourful picture.
