Portraiture

In the early years, portraits were mainly displayed in churches.
There were also statues which were a form of portraiture, and usually showed power and authority.

In 1837, the first permanent photographic process was discovered by Julia Margaret Cameron.

August Sander (1876 - 1964) was a portrait and documentary photographer and was born in Herdorf, Germany. He has been said to be  "the most important German portrait photographer of the early twentieth century". Sander wrote a book called Antlizer der Zeit (Face of Our Time) and this contained many different photos of people from different ages and classes.

Richard Avedon (1923 - 2004) was an American photographer and focused on portraits and fashion photography. The New York Times published his obituary said "his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America's image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century".
Avedon has taken some portraits of people for his collection called 'American West', and all of these pictures, like most of his other photos, are black and white.

Avedon has also photographed celebrities, such as Twiggy, Malcolm X and Marilyn Monroe.
